About Dunedin

Dunedin is often called the Edinburgh of the South, due to its street names, attractive 19th century architecture, culture scene and many cafes and pubs. Dunedin city is home to Otago University, the oldest university in New Zealand and its bustling student population is part of the reason why Dunedin has such a lively arts and fashion scene. There are many interesting walks around the university and city, through the Dunedin Botanical Gardens, along the Green Belt and up Baldwin Street - the world’s steepest street.

Dunedin is located at the head of the beautiful Otago Harbour on the Otago Peninsula. Many day trips can be taken along the Otago Peninsula where you can visit Larnach Castle, New Zealand’s only castle or view the many types of wildlife, including seals, sea-lions, yellow-eyed penguins and the awe-inspiring albatrosses. Taiaroa Head, at the end of the Otago Peninsula, is the only place in the world where albatross nest on the mainland.

Dunedin’s top attractions include the Cadbury Chocolate Factory, the Speights Brewery, the world class Dunedin Art Gallery, and for those interested in Dunedin’s gold mining history, a visit to the Otago Settlers’ Museum is a must.  For the more adventurous traveller why not go mountain biking on any one of the 17 tracks and trails around Dunedin city or take a day trip on the unique Taieri Gorge railway from Dunedin’s famous Railway Station. Dunedin is one of the most historic and interesting cities in New Zealand.

Top activities to do while backpacking in Dunedin

  • Take a wildlife tour on the beautiful Otago Peninsula where you’ll see lots of animal activity, and learn about important conservation projects around the Yellow-eyed Penguin, the Royal Albatross, sea lions and the New Zealand Fur Seal.
  • Taste wonderful treats at the Cadbury Chocolate Factory and sample the fermented hops at the famous Speights Brewery.
  • Visit New Zealand’s only castle - Larnach Castle - on the Otago Peninsula with spectacular views over the Otago Harbour and a beautiful country garden.
  • Explore Dunedin culture centers, including the important collection at the Dunedin Art Gallery, the fascinating history on display at the Otago Settler’s Museum and the gorgeous architecture of the Dunedin Railway Station.
  • Shop the wonderful Dunedin fashion boutiques stocked with locally designed clothes and accessories, or simply hang out in one of Dunedin’s many great pubs or cafes.
