Tour itinerary

Day One - Dunedin

Arrive in Dunedin ...Dunedin is becoming increasingly popular as a mellow city nurturing a strong artsy side. If you can unglue yourself from the city's cafe scene, the raggedly shaped Otago Peninsula lies practically in Dunedin's backyard and is teeming with wildlife and outdoor activities.
Lonely Planet 2006

Overnight: YHA Dunedin, Stafford Gables

Day Two - Catlins Tour
Pick up from YHA Dunedin at 7.00am
AlbatrossReturn to YHA Dunedin approx 7.30pm

This one-day tour features lots of stops at the main natural attractions in the Catlins allowing time for short walks. The Catlins is known for its harsh coastline dotted with stunning bays and beautiful bush and waterfalls inland. The wildlife however is the main feature of the trip - NZ sea-lions (our largest native mammal), Yellow-eyed Penguins, NZ fur seals and the rare Hector dolphins may be seen on any one day. In the summer months the dolphins are especially a treat - coming in close to shore at Porpoise Bay (neighbouring to Curio Bay), seen surfing in the waves amongst swimmers and surfers.

Your day on the Catlins Coaster is in a small group of less than twenty with a dedicated local guide opening up all the stories and detailed interpretation of the area, flora and fauna. The Curio Bay fossilised forest (over 180 million years in the making) is a special component of the tour with time allocated for a guided walk of this pre-Jurassic natural wonder.
